Managing waste data

There are two separate waste modules to choose from:

  • Waste module

  • Waste Fractions module

The original Waste module allows organizations to collect Waste emissions data based on the DEFRA waste groupings. It is designed to assist clients if they do not require a customized breakdown of their waste data.

The more recent CSR Waste Fractions module allows the organization to create their own Waste groupings based on internal naming conventions, and map them to an associated published waste emission from 1. DEFRA, 2. US EPA and/or 3. custom emission factor. This module allows the organization to also distinguish between waste groupings that are Hazardous vs Non-hazardous. The Waste Fractions module allows for more flexibility in reporting.

For further information about creating and mapping waste fractions, go to Managing waste fractions and emission factors.

Adding data to the Waste module

  1. Select Data Management and select GHG Activities.

  2. Use the Organisation and Geographic tabs or the date picker fields to search for a waste activity.

  3. In the Activity Name column filter, enter waste and press Enter.

  4. Select Select beside a waste activity that you want to add the data entry to.

  5. Select Add New Data Item and fill out all the mandatory (*) fields to add new data to the activity. For further information about adding data, go to Adding a data item to an activity.

  6. Select Save.

Uploading data in bulk to the Waste module

  1. In Diligent ESG toolbar, select Data Management and select Multi-Site Upload.

  2. Note

Alternatively, in the GHG Activities section, you can select Multi-Site Upload.

  3. In the Data Categopry section, in the Scope sections, select the Waste icon, and then select the data type, such as GHG Emissions, for the waste data you want to upload in bulk.

  4. Complete Steps 3 to 9 outlined in Uploading activity data to one or more activities for a specific building.

Adding data to the Waste Fractions module

  1. Select Data Management and select GHG Activities.

  2. Use the Organisation and Geographic tabs, the date picker fields, or the column filter fields to search for a waste activity.

  3. Select Select beside the waste activity that you want to add data to.

  5. Note

You must have created a specific waste combination in the Manage Waste Fractions section of Manage Settings for the Emission Factor field to be filled out. For further information about creating waste fractions, go to Creating custom waste fractions. For example, in order for the data to be uploaded, the waste combination of the Paper waste fraction, Recycling waste disposal type and Offsite waste disposal location is mapped to the emission factor Paper and board: Mixed (assumed 25% paper, 75% board) - Recycling - Closed loop supplied by DEFRA.

  6. If you are adding Waste or Water activities under the Sustainability (CSR) category, select the Greenhouse Gas Emissions tab, and in the Select preferred reporting framework dropdown, select DEFRA/DECC or United States Environmental Protection Agency.

  7. Note

If you do not select DEFRA or US EPA here then the system will not accept your data.
