Searching in Messenger

Use Messenger iOS search functionality to easily find text in messages that you've sent or received, as well as in announcement text. Search can also help you quickly find another user or group name.

There is a search bar at the top of each tab in Messenger iOS: Announcements, Conversations, Contacts, and Groups. Each search bar searches within the tab that you have open.

  1. To initiate a search, enter your search criteria into the search bar.

Search results appear as soon as you enter a character, and your results will be refined as you enter more characters.

Searches operate the following ways in each tab:

    • Announcements: Searches across the subject line and text of all your available announcements.

    • Conversations: Searches the text of all currently available messages that you've sent or received, across all of your individual and group messages.

    • Contacts: Searches the names of all of your Messenger contacts.

    • Groups: Searches the names of all groups that are available to you.

    Note

Search results include exact-match results for the text that you've entered. If you do not get your expected result refine your criteria.

  2. Select a result from the list to open the relevant content.

Selecting a search result will take the following action in each section:

    • Selecting an Announcements search result opens the relevant announcement.

    • Selecting a Conversations search result opens the relevant conversation, automatically scrolled to the relevant message.

    • Selecting a Contacts search result open your conversation with that contact.

    • Selecting a Groups search result opens that group conversation.

  3. To clear the current search and results, select the X icon in the search bar.
