Create Sub-Charts
In Group Structure Visualisation, you can divide group charts into sub-charts to visualise large group structures in smaller chunks. You can create a sub-chart from the main chart or from any existing sub-chart.
Note
The Sub-Charts option is available to clients with a Professional or Enterprise package. To learn more, contact your Customer Success Manager.
Sub-chart collections
To create a sub-chart, you create a collection that selects the subset of the group structure for the sub-chart. A collection is defined by one or more conditions. You can nest sub-charts as needed.
When you create sub-charts, the rules and conditions you create are similar to those in conditional formatting.
The differences between conditional formatting and sub-charts:
-
In conditional formatting, rules and conditions apply to the same chart.
-
In sub-charts, when you apply the conditions, Group Structure Visualisation creates a new chart that contains the entities that meet the specified collection of conditions. The new sub-chart holds a subset of the entities in the original chart.
You can switch between the main group chart and the sub-charts you create. You can also include these sub-charts in exports.
By default, each new sub-chart you create uses the settings applied to the main chart. You can also create a different set of settings for each sub-chart.
Create a sub-chart
Open sub-charts
-
Run a group structure and select Visualisation. To learn more, refer to Run a group structure.
For companies with an existing group structure, you can select the company and select the Group Visualisation tab.
-
From the top right toolbar, select Sub-Charts
to open the Sub-Charts panel.
Define a collection for the sub-chart
You can create sub-charts in several ways:
-
By selecting an entity in the main chart or a sub-chart to create a sub-chart
- By defining conditions for the sub-chart by selecting operators and criteria from lists
-
By defining if-then statements in the Text Editor. This option is useful when you want to copy and share the rules with your team.
Create a sub-chart from a selected entity
-
From the main chart or a sub-chart, select an entity that will be the parent entity in your sub-chart.
-
In the Sub-Charts panel, select Add a collection > Create from selected entity.
The system automatically configures the sub-chart collection with the following:
-
A rule that describes the collection
-
A sub-chart name from the selected entity's name
-
The following options selected: Remove from base chart, Include path to top, Include subsidiaries
You can edit this collection.
-
-
(Optional) To add more conditions, select Add a condition and select an attribute. From the first dropdown list in the Edit sub-charts panel, select an operator. From the second dropdown list, select the criteria for the condition. To learn more about how the different operator options work, refer to Operators.
After you finish defining conditions for the sub-chart, move on to finalising the configuration.
Select conditions for a sub-chart

Define if-then rules for sub-chart in the Text Editor
-
At the bottom of the Sub-Charts panel, select the LIST-TEXT switch to open the Text Editor.
-
Enter if-then statements to define conditions.
-
Select the LIST-TEXT switch again to view the collection you just added in the list view.
When you switch back to list view, the system validates the if-then statements you added and lets you know if it finds any errors in them.
After you finish defining conditions for the sub-chart, move on to finalising the configuration.
Finalise configuring the sub-chart
-
At the top of the Edit sub-charts panel, enter a name for the sub-chart.
-
(Optional) Select one or more of the sub-chart options at the bottom if required.
You can combine the options as needed.
Option
Description
Remove from base chart
Select this option to show the selected entity on a sub-chart and remove it from the base or main chart, replacing it with a link symbol. The link in the main chart takes you to the sub-chart, and the link in the sub-chart takes you back to the main chart.
Note
Entities that are necessary to maintain the top-down structure are not replaced with the link symbol.
Include path to top
Use this option to show all owners that might not meet the sub-chart rules, but are necessary to maintain the top-down structure.
If you combine this option with the Remove from base chart option, only the entities that meet the rule conditions are removed from the main chart, the owners on the path to the top are not removed.
Note
This option is inactive when the Roll up unmatched owners option is selected.
Merge path
This option works in combination with the Include path to top option.
Use this option to combine the entity boxes in the path to the top of the sub-chart into a single entity box.
When you navigate to the sub-chart with this option active, the entities merged into a single entity box are displayed as a table. The table lists the entities in the order of ownership as represented in the path to the top:
-
In top-down charts, the owner entity is in the row above the subsidiary entity.
-
In bottom-up charts, the owner entity is in the row below the subsidiary entity.
Read the table in the direction indicated by the arrows on the relationship line connectors.
Include subsidiaries
Use this option to create a sub-chart for a specific branch in the group structure. This option includes all subsidiaries down from the entities that meet the sub-chart conditions.
Roll up unmatched owners
Use this option to hide the owners that do not match the rules and conditions of the sub-chart, but are part of the legal structure for the main group chart.
Example: When preparing reports for a regulatory body with jurisdiction over one country, you may want to conceal the entities located in other countries.
When unmatched owners are hidden, the arrow heads on the relevant line connectors are diamond shape. The percentage that displays on the ownership line is the one for the rolled up owner, not the entity that displays.
Note
This option is inactive when the Include path to top option is selected.
Include external owners
Use this option to include external or other parents in the sub-chart.
Note
This option is only applicable to down group structures.
Include unmatched owners
This option works in combination with the Include external owners option.
Use this option to include the owners that do not match the rule for the sub-chart and are not included using the Include path to top option.
As a result, in the sub-chart, these owners display as external owners, and within the base or main chart, they are internal group structure parents.
Note
This option is only applicable to down group structures.

When you finish configuring the sub-chart, select Save.
A list of all group structure charts and sub-charts is available in a dropdown menu in the top left of the visualisation canvas. Sub-charts for each chart level are shown indented under their parent chart. You can nest charts as needed.
By default, any conditional formatting, filtering, grouping and other settings applied to the main chart are also applied to the sub-charts you create. You can create separate settings for each sub-chart to further customise the data on these charts. For more information, refer to Create Sub-Chart Settings.
What's next?
You can save the sub-charts you create for later use for yourself and share them with others. To learn more, refer to Save and Share Settings.
To share the chart with others on your team or print it out, use the export option that best fits your needs. When you export the chart, you can select the sub-charts to include in the export. All sub-charts are included on a separate page in the export and the name of the sub-chart is appended in the header. Sub-charts for each chart level are shown indented under their parent chart. You can select them individually. Refer to the topics on how to create exports.
